Your Snapchat Isn't Cute and Neither Are You

By Max Berman on November 27, 2015

I would consider myself a pretty up to date person when it comes to technology and social media. I totally understand the need to updated Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc., but the one thing I will never wrap my head around is Snapchat. I just want to first clarify that this has nothing to do with the platform itself, but the users. On paper Snapchat is ingenious: the answer to sending those awesome nudes you would never want to leak, and a way to share quick glimpses of your life with your friends. Most likely, if you’re reading this you have a Snapchat yourself and think I’m some stupid asshole with no friends who’s just a bitter betty for no reason. Well, observing students and young adults for the past year has made me realize a couple things about how people utilize this platform, and it’s pretty annoying.

I think my favorite place to watch the ridiculousness is definitely at the club, or  a bar. It’s pretty incredible actually, you can watch someone have a miserable time all night, awkwardly standing in the corner sipping a sad, melting Natty Light, but the minute one of their friends bounces over with the flash glaring in everyone’s eyes, everything gets lit as fuck for the snap. Like you weren’t on the verge of calling an Uber for the past hour, ready to dip from the hell that is sobriety in a college club. It’s just baffling to me, I mean obviously every single person in the entire world needs to know you’re having a great time one hundred percent of the time, right? If you turn up and don’t snap, does it even count? It’s become almost a validation, something to confirm to your peers that you are indeed cool as fuck, and just happen to record those totally “not planned” moments that just end up looking perfect on your story for the next twenty four hours.

In an era where things are rapidly ever-changing, the appeal of Snapchat is obvious, we just happen to utilize it in the most ridiculous way possible. Does everyone really need a snap every time you hit that blunt you probably didn’t even roll yourself? Do we really care that “Sorry” came on in the club? (okay, that we actually do care about) But, you see what I mean. As an outsider looking in, it’s fascinating to watch people base their lives around an image of themselves that isn’t real, and disappears after a mere day. You may think that a selfie is totally necessary since your makeup looks bomb today, just maybe not in the middle of the dance floor. To be completely honest, it just comes down to the fact that your snaps may not be as groundbreaking as you think they are, and neither are you.
