3 Top Comedians to Follow as a College Student

By Kailey Walters on July 28, 2017

We’re college students. We’re stressed. With all of the responsibilities we commit ourselves to on a regular basis, from attending classes to studying to working multiple jobs, we could do with a good laugh every once in awhile.

And what better way to do so than to keep up with some of the top comedians out there?

In the age of YouTube and generally easy digital access, finding things to keep you entertained is literally right at your fingertips. We’ve all seen the adorable and stupidly funny cat videos circulating in our news feeds and popping up on our “Recommended for you” lists, or the strangely addicting Buzzfeed videos where people try out all sorts of wacky, interesting new foods and trends.

And then there are good old comedians — people who rely on their own sense of humor to get a chuckle, a snicker, or even a full-on belly laugh out of their audience. If you’re in the mood to be entertained, check out the following list of top comedians you should keep up with.

Louis CK

One of the most well-known comedians out there now, Louis CK began his career in the 1990s and early 2000s writing for comedians including David Letterman, Conan O’Brien, Dana Carvey, and Chris Rock. He’s frequently performed stand-up on shows such as “Lopez Tonight,” “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” and “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”

Now, he even has his own official Netflix site, where you can watch his stand-up comedy special that was released on April 4 of this year. Directed by and starring himself, the movie is “witty” and “irreverent” according to the Netflix site, where Louis CK “muses on religion, eternal love, giving dogs drugs, email fights, teachers, and more in a live performance from Washington, D.C.”

With a unique, cutting sense of humor, Louis CK’s stand-up is bound to elicit some raised eyebrows and a lot of guilty (or not guilty) laughter. If you enjoy this sort of sharp, witty humor, definitely check out some of Louis CK’s material when you need a break. You certainly won’t regret it.

Kevin Hart

A comedian who began his career in 2001, Kevin Hart mainly deals with topics on African Americans, racism, American culture, parenting, and self-deprecation, just to name a few.

His career really took off starting in 2006, when he released his first stand-up album, I’m A Little Grown Man, and then a second album entitled Seriously Funny four years later. In 2011, his album Laugh at My Pain was especially successful and dealt with his personal life experiences.

As someone who previously didn’t know much about Kevin Hart or watch much stand-up comedy in general, I found myself laughing uncontrollably after just a few minutes of listening to one of Hart’s many comedy routines about family.

No matter what type of comedy you’re into, you’ll most likely find something (or many things) to laugh about while watching Hart perform. You can turn to him for comic relief when you desperately need a break from the monotony of everyday life.

Stephen Colbert

A bit different from the other comedians mentioned above, Stephen Colbert primarily performs deadpan comedy on subjects such as American politics and culture. Since 2015, he has hosted The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, a late-night TV talk show on CBS.

If you’re interested in politics or at least enjoy finding the humor in politics, Colbert may be a good choice for you. Especially with many college students becoming increasingly involved in and educated about American politics, Colbert’s subject matter is bound to provide a fresh new perspective for people to chuckle at. Plus, if you appreciate dry humor, Colbert is a great option to go with.

In the midst of everyday stress, having a few high-quality comedians to watch can be a bright spot in your day. Even if it’s just for 10 minutes here and there, you can find something to laugh and smile about to temporarily lift your mood. Just make sure to curb the amount of time you spend watching these comedians, so as not to get too addicted … and you’ll be good.
